Kids in the Kitchen

The Junior League of Fort Wayne participates in the Junior Leagues' Kids in the Kitchen Association-wide initiative. This program makes an impact by educating the public at a grassroots level regarding solutions to address childhood obesity.

The Kids in the Kitchen program continues to make an impact in local communities by both raising awareness and involving youth and their families in hands-on activities that help empower youth to make healthy choices.  Each year, the Kids in the Kitchen program gains awareness and the impact continues to grow.  Through Kids in the Kitchen, JLFW provides information, materials, and interactive lessons related to healthy eating and nutrition to children and parents in their communities.

In 2010, the Junior League of Fort Wayne was proud to continue our service to the community featuring our fifth annual Kids in the Kitchen program.  Our partnerships were with Wellspring Interfaith Social Services and the Transitions Program, which is part of the Fort Wayne Women’s Bureau.  The Wellspring Kids in the Kitchen program took place on February 16, 18, and 19, and the Transitions’ Kids in the Kitchen program was held on March 16, 18 and 19.  Our programs featured information, dinner for all participants as well as parents/guardians, and four educational and fun learning stations for the children. One of the stations helped the children make a healthy snack. Another station discussed how children can make healthier choices by understanding how much sugar is in their favorite drinks.

Save the Date for Kids in the Kitchen 2011

The 2011 Junior League of Fort Wayne's Kids in the Kitchen event will be held on Thursday, April 14, 2011 from 4:30 - 7:30pm at the Boys & Girls Club, 2609 Fairfield Avenue in Fort Wayne.

The goal of the Kids in the Kitchen initiative is to empower youth to make healthy lifestyle choices and help reverse the growth of childhood obesity and its associated health issues. The kids rotate through several stations, spending about 15 minutes in each learning about healthy portion sizes and good choices when it comes to snacks & drinks, games and activities.  This will be a fun event for kids, parents and volunteers!

If you have questions or want to sign up to help, please contact the Junior League office at 425-3447 or office@jlfw.org.
